Maido!
was founded in 2003 by Seiko Dailey and is the only Japanese-owned
grocery store in the Greater Philadelphia area. We focus on bringing
you the experience of visiting Japan, from our eat-in lunch counter
where we serve authentic Okonomiyaki, Yaki-soba, and other inexpensive
Japanese meals, to our selection of Japanese toys, rental videos,
and fresh produce. Stop by and enjoy a great meal while watching
a live sumo tournament beamed from Japan by satellite! You don't
have to speak Japanese... but we'll help you learn!
Our name comes from the greeting often heard in the Kansai Region
of western Japan (Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe). "Maido!" could literally
translate as "every time", but in the Kansai region it
is used as a friendly greeting to your best customers and more closely
translates as "Nice to see you again!" When combined with
the Osaka-dialect for thank you ("Maido okini") it translates
as "Thank you for your continued patronage". |
